Purulia · A century of care
From a Charitable Hospital
to a Modern Medical College
Founded in generosity and sustained by public service, our heritage is woven into the life of Purulia.
A century of service.
An enduring purpose.
01 / The founding legacy
A gift to Purulia.
A legacy for generations.
The heritage of Deben Mahata Government Medical College & Hospital begins with a simple and enduring purpose: to serve the people of Purulia.
The institution’s hospital roots reach back to Purulia Charitable Hospital in 1925. Its surviving commemorative plaque honours the generosity that gave this early centre of care its buildings and its home.
A donation of one lakh rupees from Raja Bahadur Jyoti Prosad Singh Deo of Pachet provided the principal support for the hospital buildings. Babu Lalit Mohan Ghose and his brothers gifted the site, measuring approximately twenty bighas.
Their contributions were commemorated in the Raja Jyoti Prosad Singh Deo Bahadur Indoor Hospital and the Nandalall Charitable Dispensary, the latter named in memory of Babu Nanda Lall Ghose. These names preserve the story of the families whose public spirit helped establish the hospital.

Across the generations
An enduring place
in the life of Purulia.
Through successive generations, the hospital became part of Purulia’s shared history: a place of treatment, reassurance and public service. Its historic buildings and inscriptions remain tangible links to that early spirit of philanthropy.
On 11 July 2001, the inauguration of the Outdoor Patient Department building under the Second State Health Systems Development Project (SHSDP-II) marked a further chapter in the development of hospital services.
02 / The Hatuara chapter
A heritage of care.
A new calling in education.
The inception of the medical college in 2018 opened a new chapter in this institutional journey, bringing medical education into the story of public healthcare in Purulia.
On 15 October 2020, the college received its first permission for 100 MBBS seats, laying the foundation for the undergraduate programme in the 2020–21 academic year.
At Hatuara, academic, hospital and residential facilities provide a setting for learning and clinical service. Here, the responsibilities of caring for patients and educating future doctors form part of one continuing institutional purpose.
That academic community entered a further phase of growth in 2025–26, when the annual MBBS intake increased to 150 seats from the NEET-UG 2025 admission cycle.
